Scientists often use logarithmic scales for quantities that vary widely in magnitude. Certainly, [H+] is one such quantity. In a 1 mol/L solution of sodium hydroxide in water, for instance, [H+] =10^(-14) . It's much more convenient to write down pH = 14.
