An IMO problem (BOMC-2)

Unread post by sm.joty » Tue Mar 27, 2012 3:03 pm

IMO-1976
The sum of the digits of $4444^{4444}$ is $A$. Let $B$ be the sum of the digits of $A$. Find the sum of the digits of $B$.

104 Number Theory problem

I don't know what the 104 NT solution is. But the usual idea for this problem is to use that if $x\equiv a\pmod 9$ then the sum of the digits of $x$ is also $\equiv a\pmod 9$. Can you see what to do from here?

$4444^{4444} \equiv 7 (mod 9)$

Nice! Its wonderful to see how little things are so helpful in problems!
