Disjoint disks

Prove that any collection of disjoint disks in the plane is countable. What if we replace "disks" by "circles"?

Nice problem. The following proof works for any finite dimensional euclidean space.
The circle case is easy since any disk can be divided into uncountably many circles.

Take any collection of disjoint disks. Each disk contains at least one point, all of whose coordinates are rational. Pick one such point for each disk. Move the disks so that the centers are at those points. Since, the original disks were disjoint, these points (the new centers with rational coordinates) are in one-to-one correspondence with the disks. Since rational numbers are countable, we are done.

Yes that is almost the same as my solution. Just note that we don't need to move the disks because each such point specifies one and only one of the disks (as they are disjoint).

What if we have a centre at each real distance along the $x$-axis?

That cannot happen, according to the condition that the disks are disjoint. Suppose, we have a disk centered at (a,0) with radius r. Then, we may not have any other disk centered in the interval [a-r,a+r].

*It can be proved quite easily that we can sort collection of disjoint intervals as well, just to clarify that it was not taken for granted. :P *
